Louisiana’s Unemployment Insurance Laws – Important Updates

Important Updates to Louisiana’s Unemployment Insurance Laws (Effective August 1, 2025)

The Louisiana Workforce Commission (LWC) has announced key changes to the state’s Unemployment Insurance (UI) laws through Act 340, signed by Governor Jeff Landry on June 11, 2025. These updates, effective August 1, 2025, primarily affect how employers handle the Separation Notice (Form 77):

  • Electronic Submission Required: Employers must now submit Form 77 electronically to the LWC. Other submission methods are no longer accepted.
  • Extended Deadline: The submission deadline has been extended from 3 to 10 calendar days following the employee’s separation.

Act 340 also removes outdated references related to Hurricane Katrina-era benefits.

Why Form 77 Matters:
Form 77 is essential for determining UI benefit eligibility. Timely, accurate submissions help employers:

  • Stay compliant with federal and state laws
  • Protect their UI tax rate
  • Prevent improper benefit payments
  • Ensure faster and more accurate claim decisions
